AI SEO Tools: Which Ones Are Worth Paying For

September 5, 2026By Ajan Kanagalingam

Yext launched a free AI agent for small business owners on September 1, 2026. Corvo AI texts you recommendations for improving your local marketing, and it is one of dozens of products now sold as an AI SEO tool. The phrase covers four quite different things, and a business owner comparing prices across them is usually comparing a rank tracker to a text generator without noticing.

The four categories hiding behind one phrase

CategoryWhat it doesWorth paying for?
Technical auditingCrawls your site, flags broken links, slow pages, missing tagsYes, once. A quarterly crawl finds most of what matters
Visibility trackingWhere you rank, and whether AI assistants cite youThe AI half is the part that got useful in 2026
Content generationDrafts posts, titles, meta descriptions at volumeRarely as a separate subscription. Your assistant does this
Agentic executionMakes the changes itself: listings, edits, publishingFor repetitive, reversible tasks only

Most of the marketing spend in this market goes behind category three, because generating text is cheap to build and easy to demo. It is also the category where the buyer ends up with more work than they started with.

The category that changed this year

A growing share of buying research now happens inside an assistant rather than a search results page. Someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini who to hire for a given job, gets three names, and never sees a blue link. Nothing in a traditional rank tracker tells you whether you were one of the three.

AI visibility tools fill that gap. They run a set of buyer prompts across several assistants on a schedule and report whether you were mentioned, how you were described, and who was named instead. Yext's September announcement pushed its platform in this direction, adding brand-level AI visibility and answer engine optimisation to its agentic product. Several smaller tools do the same thing at a lower price.

You can run a version of this yourself for free, and most small businesses should before paying anyone. Write down the five questions a buyer asks before hiring in your category. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot on the first of the month. Record whether you appear. Fifteen minutes, and it gives you the same signal a dashboard would. Pay for a tool once you are tracking thirty prompts instead of five, or once someone other than you needs the report. The underlying work is covered in our guide to optimising for AI search.

Where the content generators go wrong

A tool that writes forty blog posts a month solves a problem almost nobody has. The constraint on most small business content is not drafting speed. It is that nobody has decided what the pages should say, and nobody has time to check what comes out.

There is also a real downside to publishing the output unread. Google's spam policies cover scaled content abuse, which means producing pages at volume primarily to manipulate rankings rather than to help people. A page can be written with AI and rank perfectly well. A hundred pages published without anyone reading them is a different proposition, and it is the pattern the policy describes.

The quieter cost is the review queue. Ten drafted posts that each need a careful edit are worse than three posts someone actually thought about, which is the trap we covered in our piece on the workslop problem. If you already pay for a general assistant, you already have a content generator. Adding a second subscription for the same capability rarely survives a renewal review.

Agentic tools, and where to stop them

The newest category does the work rather than recommending it. An agent updates your business listings across directories, fixes inconsistent hours, pushes a schema change, or publishes an edit. Corvo AI, free at askcorvo.com since September 1, takes the recommendation half of that and delivers it by text message to owners who are rarely at a desk.

Automated execution fits repetitive, reversible, low-judgment tasks. Keeping your address and hours identical across forty directories is exactly that kind of work, and it is genuinely tedious for a person. Keep a human on anything that changes positioning: your service descriptions, your pricing pages, how you explain what you do. Those are business decisions wearing an SEO costume.

The same access questions apply here as anywhere else you let software act on your behalf. Which account does it use, what can it change, and can you see what it did. We set that out in three boxes for an AI agent.

A cheap stack that covers most businesses

Google Search Console, free. Which queries bring you impressions and clicks, which pages Google has indexed, and which it has not. Most paid dashboards resell this data with nicer charts.

Bing Webmaster Tools, free. Worth ten minutes because Bing's index feeds Copilot, and its keyword data is separate from Google's.

One technical crawl per quarter. Several tools offer a free tier that covers a few hundred URLs, which is enough for most small business sites.

A monthly manual assistant check. Five prompts, four assistants, fifteen minutes, recorded in a spreadsheet so you can see movement over six months.

Your existing AI assistant for drafting. Feed it three of your best past pages as examples before asking for a new one, which is the step most people skip and the reason AI drafts read generically.

Add a paid tool when you can name the decision it will change. If the honest answer is that it will produce more content, put the money into one properly researched page instead. Our ROI calculator handles the comparison if you want it on paper, and making your site legible to AI agents covers the structured data side that no tool will do for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AI SEO tools?

The label covers four different products. Content generators write drafts and meta descriptions. Technical auditors crawl your site and flag errors. Visibility trackers report where you rank, and increasingly whether AI assistants mention you. Agentic tools go further and make changes on your behalf, such as updating listings or publishing edits. Vendors market all four under the same phrase, so establish which one you are buying before comparing prices.

Do AI SEO tools actually improve rankings?

Auditing and visibility tracking help because they tell you what to fix. Content generation helps only if a person edits the output and the page answers a question your buyers ask. Publishing volumes of unedited AI text works against you: Google’s spam policies cover scaled content abuse, meaning pages produced at volume mainly to manipulate rankings rather than to help readers. The tool is not the risk. Publishing without review is.

How do I track whether ChatGPT mentions my business?

You can do it manually for free. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the four or five questions a buyer would ask before hiring someone in your category, and record whether you appear and what the assistant says about you. Paid AI visibility trackers automate that across more prompts and more assistants, which is worth paying for when you are tracking dozens of queries rather than five.

How much should a small business spend on AI SEO tools?

Most businesses under 50 staff can cover the essentials for close to nothing. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and give you the ranking and indexing data most paid dashboards resell. Add one paid tool when you can name the specific decision it will change, such as an AI visibility tracker if getting cited by assistants is a real channel for you. Budget for the person doing the work before the software.

Can an AI agent do my SEO for me?

Parts of it. Agentic marketing tools now update local listings, suggest fixes and push changes automatically, and Yext launched a free SMB version called Corvo AI on September 1, 2026 that texts owners local marketing recommendations. Automated execution suits repetitive, reversible tasks such as keeping business listings consistent. Keep a person on anything that changes your positioning, your service pages, or how you describe what you sell.
