title="GST/HST Calculator Canada"></iframe>Understanding Canadian Sales Taxes
In short, every Canadian purchase carries 5% federal GST, and most provinces add their own tax on top: 13% HST in Ontario, 15% HST in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI, 14% HST in Nova Scotia, GST plus PST in BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and GST plus QST in Quebec. Alberta and the territories charge 5% GST only. Rates verified July 2026.
What is GST?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 5% federal tax applied to most goods and services sold in Canada. It's collected by businesses and remitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). All provinces and territories are subject to GST, though in HST provinces it's combined with provincial tax.
What is HST?
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) combines the federal GST with provincial sales tax into a single tax. Ontario charges 13% HST; New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%; Nova Scotia charges 14% (reduced from 15% on April 1, 2025). This simplifies tax collection for businesses operating in these provinces.
What is PST?
Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is charged separately from GST in British Columbia (7%), Saskatchewan (6%), and Manitoba (7%). Quebec charges Quebec Sales Tax (QST) at 9.975%. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax.
How to Calculate Tax
To add tax: Multiply the pre-tax amount by the tax rate. For example, $100 in Ontario (13% HST) = $100 × 1.13 = $113 total.
To extract tax: Divide the total by (1 + tax rate). For example, $113 in Ontario = $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 pre-tax, with $13 tax.
How Do You Calculate HST in Ontario?
Ontario charges a single 13% HST on most goods and services — there is no separate GST or PST line on an Ontario receipt. To calculate HST in Ontario, multiply the pre-tax price by 0.13 (or by 1.13 for the total). Common amounts:
| Pre-tax price | HST (13%) | Total in Ontario |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $6.50 | $56.50 |
| $100 | $13.00 | $113.00 |
| $500 | $65.00 | $565.00 |
| $1,000 | $130.00 | $1,130.00 |
| $2,500 | $325.00 | $2,825.00 |
Some items are taxed differently in Ontario: basic groceries are zero-rated (0%), children's clothing and books qualify for a point-of-sale rebate of the 8% provincial portion (you pay only 5%), and residential rent and most health services are exempt. For everything else, the calculator above applies the 13% Ontario rate — in either direction.
How Do You Reverse-Calculate HST From a Total?
Reverse HST calculation answers "how much of this receipt was tax?" — essential for expense claims and bookkeeping. Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the rate, and the difference is the tax:
- Ontario (13%): total ÷ 1.13 = pre-tax. A $250 receipt → $221.24 pre-tax, $28.76 HST.
- Nova Scotia (14%): total ÷ 1.14 = pre-tax. A $250 receipt → $219.30 pre-tax, $30.70 HST.
- NB / NL / PEI (15%): total ÷ 1.15 = pre-tax. A $250 receipt → $217.39 pre-tax, $32.61 HST.
- GST-only provinces (5%): total ÷ 1.05 = pre-tax. A $250 receipt → $238.10 pre-tax, $11.90 GST.
Or skip the arithmetic: switch the calculator above to "Extract tax from total", enter the receipt amount, and pick the province. If you're doing this for stacks of invoices every month, our guide to automating GST/HST invoice extraction with AI shows how to stop doing it by hand.
