AI Consulting for Law Firms

Privilege-aware AI rollouts for Canadian law firms: vendor selection, PIPEDA + Law Society alignment, and partner-led adoption.

Where AI actually helps law firms

Four focused use cases. We will help you pick the one with the highest ROI for your firm and start there.

Document review and contract analysis

AI-assisted first-pass review with privileged-data isolation, plus tooling for clause extraction, anomaly detection, and version comparison.

Legal research

Vendor-vetted AI research tools that respect citation, hallucination, and jurisdiction concerns, with workflow design that keeps the lawyer in the loop.

Client intake automation

AI-aided intake forms, conflict checks, and matter setup that reduce paralegal load without exposing PII to public models.

Knowledge management

Private RAG over firm precedents, briefs, and templates so juniors stop reinventing the wheel and partners reuse their own work.

Compliance & professional considerations

Every engagement aligns with solicitor-client privilege, Law Society of Ontario rules of professional conduct (or your province), and PIPEDA. We document data handling end-to-end and never recommend tools that train on your prompts by default.

How a typical engagement runs

Four phases, fixed scope, named owner

Phase 1

Discovery

Practice-area interviews, privileged-data inventory, existing tool review.

Phase 2

Vendor selection

Shortlist 2-3 law-aware AI tools (Harvey, Spellbook, CoCounsel, custom). Scripted demos against real matter scenarios.

Phase 3

Pilot + governance

Controlled pilot in one practice area. AI use policy, partner-led oversight committee, audit logging.

Phase 4

Adoption

Lawyer training, internal champion enablement, 60-day usage and quality review.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you handle privilege in AI workflows?

Privileged data does not go to public LLM endpoints. We architect workflows that route privileged matter content to private or contractually-restricted models (e.g., Azure OpenAI with no-training agreements, self-hosted open models, or law-specific vendors with privilege-aware terms). Every engagement includes a privileged-data flow diagram you can show your insurer.

Are you a Law Society approved supplier?

Law Society of Ontario does not maintain an "approved supplier" list for AI consulting. What matters is whether the engagement and resulting tools meet the rules of professional conduct, particularly around competence, confidentiality, and supervision of non-lawyers (including AI). Our engagements are designed to meet those rules and we provide written documentation for your firm's risk and compliance officers.

How long is a typical engagement?

4-6 weeks for a single practice area (vendor selection + pilot). 8-12 weeks for firm-wide rollout including governance and adoption. We do not believe in 12-month "AI transformation" engagements for law firms.

What does this cost for a small to mid-sized firm?

Single-practice-area engagements typically run $10K-$25K. Firm-wide rollouts run $30K-$80K. We provide a fixed quote after a 30-minute discovery call. Many firms start with the AI Readiness Assessment ($3.5K-$12K) before committing to a larger engagement.

Do you work with sole practitioners and small firms?

Yes. For sole practitioners or firms under 10 lawyers, the ChatGPT Stack Plan ($2.5K-$8K) is usually the right starting point. Larger engagements scale to the firm.

Thinking about AI consulting for your law firms firm?
