What the data shows

The assistant race has a clear growth story. ChatGPT dominates absolute demand (~24.9M monthly Canadian searches, +22% YoY), but the growth is elsewhere: Claude (+755%) and Gemini (+362%) are compounding fast, while DeepSeek's early-2026 surge has reversed into a 56% decline — the only major assistant losing Canadian interest.

Business demand is getting specific. Generic terms are flat or falling (“ai for business” -24%), while buy-ready phrasings accelerate: “ai for small business” +187%, “ai integration services” +150%, “ai strategy consulting” +59%. Canadian SMEs have moved from “what is this” to “who can build this for us.”

The skills story inverted. “Prompt engineering” searches fell 46% as models stopped needing coaxing, while “will AI take my job” rose 53% — skill anxiety is shifting from “how do I use it” to “what does it mean for me.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest-growing AI assistant in Canada?

By search-demand growth, Claude: Canadian Google searches for "claude ai" grew about 755% year-over-year to roughly 450,000 per month (Q3 2026), the fastest growth of any major assistant. Gemini grew about 362% and Copilot about 82%. ChatGPT remains far larger in absolute terms at roughly 24.9 million monthly Canadian searches, growing 22%.

Is DeepSeek still popular in Canada?

Search interest has fallen sharply. Canadian searches for DeepSeek are down about 56% year-over-year to roughly 301,000 per month (Q3 2026) — the only major AI assistant with declining demand, consistent with the early-2026 hype cycle unwinding.

Are Canadian small businesses searching for AI help?

Yes, and it is accelerating from a small base: "ai for small business" is up about 187% year-over-year and "ai integration services" is up about 150% (Q3 2026). Broad terms like "ai for business" are flat-to-down, suggesting demand is shifting from general curiosity to specific, buy-ready searches.

Is prompt engineering still in demand?

Search demand is fading: Canadian searches for "prompt engineering" fell about 46% year-over-year (Q3 2026), while "will AI take my job" rose about 53%. As models improved, the perceived need for specialist prompting skills declined faster than general AI-skills interest.

Which Canadian city searches for ChatGPT the most?

Toronto leads in absolute volume (~3.35M monthly searches), but Calgary leads per capita: roughly 1.22M monthly ChatGPT searches against a metro population of about 1.6M — the highest intensity among Canada's six largest markets, ahead of Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.

Methodology

Google search volumes for Canada (national) and six city markets, sourced via the DataForSEO API (Google Ads / Labs data). Year-over-year change compares the mean of the three most recent months against the same three months one year earlier. Terms are grouped into five baskets tracked consistently each quarter. Volumes are rounded by the source and should be read as demand indicators, not precise counts. First published July 2026; updated quarterly.
