ChatGPT Ads: What They Mean for Your Business

September 4, 2026By Ajan Kanagalingam

OpenAI said on August 31, 2026 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, about 200 days after launch, and opened self-service buying to advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Reuters reported that small and mid-sized businesses now make up what OpenAI calls a material share of that spend. So there are two questions for a Canadian business owner: can you buy this, and does it change anything if you do not.

What ChatGPT ads actually are

An ad in ChatGPT is a labelled placement shown alongside a conversation. OpenAI says the system picks what to show from the context of the current conversation, and that depending on the country and the person's settings it may also use context from their broader ChatGPT use. The company states that ads are clearly labelled, kept separate from answers, and that advertising does not influence what the assistant says. Advertisers do not receive access to private conversations.

The mechanics will look familiar if you have run search or social campaigns. OpenAI says cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding now account for most campaigns, with a Pixel and a Conversions API for measurement, plus product feeds, platform and geographic targeting, and custom audiences. That is a conventional performance advertising stack sitting on an unconventional surface.

Check the audience against your own buyer. Ads appear for people on the free tier and the lower-priced Go plan. OpenAI describes more than a billion weekly active users, and the free tier is the large majority of them. If you sell to enterprise procurement teams working in an Enterprise seat, that traffic is not where they are. If you sell to consumers, sole traders, or small business owners using the free app on a phone, it is exactly where they are.

Can you buy it from Canada?

Confirm this at ads.openai.com before you plan a quarter around it. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are available in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team and its agency and technology partners. Self-service through Ads Manager launched in the United States and, on August 31, expanded to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Canada was not named in that expansion.

That does not mean a Canadian advertiser is shut out, since partner-mediated buying covers a wider set of markets than self-serve does. It does mean the answer to "can we run this next month" is a phone call rather than an assumption. We have watched enough Canadian teams build plans on features that turned out to be United States only, which is the same trap covered in our note on vetting AI vendor claims.

What the billion-dollar number tells you, and what it does not

An annualized run rate takes a recent period and multiplies it out to a year. It is a snapshot of pace, not money in the bank, and for a business that is growing quickly it flatters the picture. The trajectory is still steep: OpenAI said in April that the United States pilot had crossed $100 million annualized within six weeks of launch, so the channel went from $100 million to $1 billion in roughly five months.

eMarketer analyst Nate Elliott called the announcement "incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing," on the grounds that a $1 billion run rate suggests OpenAI is well short of the roughly $2.5 billion in advertising revenue it has targeted for 2026. Both readings can be true. A channel can grow fast and still be smaller than its owner hoped.

None of this determines whether the channel works for you. OpenAI's totals tell you the inventory exists and that other advertisers are buying it. Your own cost per booked call tells you whether to keep buying it. Those are different measurements and only the second one is yours.

How to test it without wasting a quarter

Treat a first ChatGPT ad campaign the way you would treat any unproven channel. The novelty of the surface is not a reason to change your standards for it.

1. Confirm you can buy it in your market. Self-serve or through a partner, with a named contact and a start date. Do this before you write creative.

2. Set a budget that buys statistical signal, not a token gesture. A few hundred clicks is the floor for saying anything about conversion rate. If your current paid search cost per click is around $4, a $2,000 test gets you into that range. Below that you are buying an anecdote.

3. Install the Pixel and the Conversions API on day one. Retroactive attribution never works. If you cannot connect a click to a form fill or a booked call, you will end the test with a spend number and an opinion.

4. Compare it against the channel it would displace, not against zero. The question is whether $2,000 in ChatGPT beats $2,000 in Google Ads or LinkedIn for your cost per qualified lead. Our ROI calculator is built for that kind of side-by-side.

5. Write for someone mid-conversation. A person who is three messages into planning a bathroom renovation is in a different frame than a person typing a keyword into a search box. The intent is often earlier and broader, which usually means a softer offer converts better than a hard one.

What changes for you as a seller, not a buyer

Most Canadian small businesses will not buy ChatGPT ads this year. The channel still affects them, because the surface where a growing share of buyers ask "who should I hire for this" now has paid placements on it, and everyone in your category can bid.

Being named inside the answer remains a separate asset, and OpenAI is explicit that money cannot buy it. When an assistant recommends three firms and yours is one of them, that placement came from your content, your structured data, and what third-party sources say about you. It compounds, it does not stop when the budget stops, and no competitor can outbid you for it. We covered the mechanics in optimising for AI search and in making your website legible to AI agents.

The practical move is to measure that side too. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the four or five questions your buyers would ask, and record whether you appear. It takes fifteen minutes and it is the only visibility metric in this channel you fully control. If you also sell products, the related shift is covered in our post on selling to AI shoppers.

A note on where this is heading

OpenAI has said its next phase will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and add formats, objectives, buying options and measurement, and that it will explore ways for businesses to interact with consumers more natively inside ChatGPT. That last phrase is doing a lot of work and nobody outside OpenAI knows what it will become. Anthropic, for its part, does not sell ads at all, so the two largest assistants are running different business models and your buyers may be sitting in either one.

For now, the action is small. Find out whether you can buy in Canada. Run one properly instrumented test if the answer is yes and your buyers use the free tier. Keep spending on the organic side either way, because that is the part that keeps working after the campaign ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are ChatGPT ads?

They are paid placements shown inside ChatGPT conversations, labelled as ads and displayed separately from the assistant’s answer. OpenAI says its ads system uses the context of the current conversation to choose what to show, and that depending on the country and the user’s settings it may also draw on context from the person’s broader ChatGPT use. OpenAI states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives and that advertisers do not get access to private conversations.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI has been showing ads to people on the free tier and on the lower-priced Go plan. Paid tiers above that have not been part of the ad-supported experience. Because the free tier accounts for the large majority of what OpenAI describes as more than a billion weekly active users, the ad surface is mostly consumer traffic rather than the enterprise seats your buyers may be using at work.

Can Canadian businesses buy ChatGPT ads?

Check ads.openai.com before you plan around it. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are available in more than 40 countries through its Ads Solutions team and its agency and technology partners, and that self-service buying through Ads Manager runs in the United States and, from August 31, 2026, across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Canada was not named in that self-serve expansion, so a Canadian advertiser may need to go through a partner or wait. Confirm availability before you commit budget to a quarter.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

OpenAI has not published rate cards. It says most campaigns now run on cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding, which means you set a bid or a target outcome and pay on performance rather than buying a fixed placement. Treat your first spend as a measurement exercise: budget enough to get a few hundred clicks, and judge it on your cost per qualified lead against whatever channel it would displace.

Does buying ads help my business appear in ChatGPT answers?

No. OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, and the ads are shown separately from them. Getting named inside an answer is a content and structured-data problem, not a media-buying one. If your goal is to be recommended when someone asks an assistant who to hire, that work sits with your site content, your schema markup, and third-party sources the model has read.
